Lifting Laminate

Question: We recently rushed a wrap job on a van. Using AutoMARK wrapping vinyl and the proper laminate… we didn’t allow the ink to dry for the proper time.. I believe we applied the laminate within the first hour after printing. Parts where the ink is heavy black in the grooves of the van is causing lifting and bubbles. We recommended to the van owner that we would like to redo the van. How would you proceed?

Answer: If it is the vinyl and laminate lifting off of the van together, than it is because you didn’t use either enough primer or heat. If it is just the laminate lifting off but the vinyl stays on the van, than it is exactly what you already knew. When you have heavy ink areas or saturated colors it takes longer to dry and gas out. Typically you should wait 24 before laminating to allow this to happen. The other thing you want to make sure of is that the correct laminate for the vinyl is being used. Reason being: you need to have a laminate that has the same properties as the vinyl to allow it to bend and flex along with it. If you use a laminate that is not comparable it will not hold to the vinyl and you will be left with the result you have on the van. The way to proceed from here is to redo the van like you suggest. Nothing sucks more than having a van out on the street that looks like crap, and when people ask “Hey, who did that wrap” they say….. you did.
